The black olive tree (Bucida Spinosa) does not produce edible fruit, but derives its name from the black seed capsules that it develops in late summer. It is an evergreen native to the Florida Keys. The black olive tree has thick, bluish-green foliage and its branches are lined sporadically with 1 1/2-inch long spines. This tree prefers full to partial sun and is tolerant of most soil conditions, though it will not thrive if its roots remain too moist.
